About Us

The Aurora is part of life’s circle—believed to be where the spirits, departed from their loved ones and remain in the sky. In many cultures the lights/stars in the night sky are believed to be the spirits of the departed family and friends shining their light on those they have left behind.
Aurora funeral services has been renamed from Hammond & Ryder earlier this year. Marie and Denis Knight bought the business two years ago. Aurora funerals services is locally owned and operated and are proud to be Gore’s only locally owned funeral home.
Marie and Denis are joined by Raewyn Simpson and between them they have 30 years            experience in the funeral industry.
Supporting families through every step
At Aurora all our families are respected and unique, ensuring we focus on tailoring support including the service to meet each individuals needs and respecting and honouring their loved one. We are committed to guiding and supporting a farewell that is as exceptional and special as the person you are grieving for. We continue to build our resources to sup-port you, and we now have a Classic Hearse as part of our fleet.

Marie Knight

I am the owner of Aurora Funeral Services along with her husband, Denis.

I have an authentic desire to help and support people in their time of need and consider this a key part of my nature. I value the importance and privilege of caring for the deceased and preserving their dignity which I believe is a meaningful and significant part of the ‘end of life’ process.

I consider it an honour and privilege to assist the community by way of my work, in a sincere, compassionate, and professional manner.

I enjoy spending time with our grandchildren, going to movies and enjoying all that Gore has to offer.

I enjoy helping families with their journey through choosing and designing a headstone or plaque for their loved ones.

As well we restore, refurbish, memorials in our district. I take pride in my work, sharing my skills and helping families achieve a special monument to visit in the future.

In my spare time I am involved in the Gore Vintage Car Club and work on car projects at home.

I enjoy Gore, having lived here for 20 years.

I worked in Balclutha for Doug Nesbit Funerals then Leishman Funerals for 25 years.

A decision to move to Gore meant a new role at Aurora Funeral Services.

I am very proud and privileged to be working alongside a passionate team at Aurora Funeral Services and who share a genuine passion for giving back to their local community.

In my spare time, I loves spending time with my children, grandchildren and close friends.
